First veterans' home to open in Chicago

November 10, 2009 (NAPERVILLE, Ill.) Governor Pat Quinn made the announcement at a ceremony Tuesday morning for veterans. He said the site of the 200-bed facility is near the Edens Expressway, and public transportation, and is convenient to employees and visitors.

Governor Quinn called the home a top priority.

"We're gonna do it in an environmentally friendly way, in a healthy way," Quinn said. "We especially have to take care of our veterans who are suffering from Alzheimer's disease. And this will be a state-of-the-art medical facility that we really desperately need in Illinois. We have waiting lists for our veterans' homes.

The home for men and women is being financed by both the state and federal governments. Residents will be charged based on ability to pay, and those who are needy can live there free.
