150 Chicago students donate to shoe drive

November 24, 2009 (CHICAGO) They marched to Lincoln and Leland on the city's Northwest side.

It's the site of the Second Annual Lincoln Square Christkindl Market.

One hundred fifty students from St. Matthias School donated bags of footwear to the St. Nicholas Shoe at the Square.

The goal is to collect more than 2,000 pairs of shoes.

"Last year it happened to fall on St. Nicholas Day and we thought well -- this is something," said Terry Tuohy of St. Matthias Church. "It's one thing to do an event. It's another thing to give back. So we came up with – what's a great idea to get the kids involved -- to get them more interested in some our old German customs so we decided to do a shoe drive."

The shoe drive benefits the St. Vincent DePaul Society of Chicago.
