High school and college students rallied in Chicago Friday to try to prevent a 21-year-old collegian from being deported to Mexico.The students cheered an announcement that hundreds have signed petitions on behalf of Rigo Padilla, a graduate of Harold Washington College who now attends the University of Illinois at Chicago. Padilla was speaking Friday at the First United Methodist Church.
He and his parents came to Chicago illegally 15 years ago, and his status was discovered after a traffic offense.
Padilla is scheduled to be deported December 16.
U.S. Rep . Jan Schakowsky announced that she has filed a bill to grant Padilla permanent resident status.
