Man charged with attempted child abduction

December 28, 2009 (AURORA, Ill.) Aurora police say Stephen P. Sweigart of the 900-block of Lenwood Court was also charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, ten counts of unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of cannabis and two counts of unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. The aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and cannabis charges are felonies.

Police say Sweigart allegedly approached an 8-year-old boy inside the Jewel-Osco in the 1900-block of West Galena Boulevard and talked to the boy about some toys the child was playing with. Sweigart allegedly asked the boy to come home with him, but the boy refused, and Sweigart left the store.

The boy's mother witnessed the incident, police said.

Sweigart was soon pulled over by an officer who searched Sweigart's car and found two handguns, one of which was loaded; along with several boxes of ammunition, numerous throwing stars, and drug paraphernalia. Officers say they also found adult-oriented toys, various items of lingerie and children's toys in the minivan.

Sweigart's home was then searched, and police say they recovered about 74 grams of pot and additional drug paraphernalia.

Sweigart's bond was set at $50,000.00 Monday.
