Toyota tops auto industry in recalls

December 30, 2009 (CHICAGO) It's due to the recall of more than 4 million Toyota and Lexus models. Those cars first had floor mat issues where those mats could cause the gas pedal to get stuck.

Owners were advised to remove the floor mats. Toyota then said it would modify and replace the gas pedals. It also decided to change the programming on vehicles so that the brake pedal overrides the gas pedal.

Safety recalls for all automakers have generally declined in recent years, but totals can vary widely with one or two big problems.
