Police shoot man during South Side traffic stop

January 1, 2010 (CHICAGO) Police say plainclothes officers in a marked car noticed a seatbelt violation in a vehicle with two men.

A police statement says the officers saw suspicious movements by the occupants, asked them to leave the car, and began a protective pat-down. They say the passenger tried to take the officer's weapon, then reached for his own handgun, and was shot by the other officer.

The suspect was taken to Christ Hospital.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
