January 19, 2010 --Parents who normally want to know the sex of their unborn child can usually find out through ultrasound in the second trimester. But a new study finds a new blood test that can be done as early as seven weeks into the pregnancy is 100 percent accurate. The test is important because in some cases there are medical reasons to determine gender early. That can mean invasive tests, such as amniocentesis, which carry a small risk of miscarriage.
The study appears in the journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
It did not discuss cost or when the test might be available.
