Daley: Chicago handgun ban saves lives

January 21, 2010 (CHICAGO) Daley is in Washington for the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

The meeting is focusing on the economy and jobs. But the mayor is also defending the city's long time handgun ban. In March, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider whether it is constitutional.

"Many mayors who have the political courage to stand up and say we just want reasonable gun laws. We don't think anybody should carry an AK47. We should not have excess handguns in our society," said Daley.

The court threw out Washington, DC's handgun ban. But the ruling left open the issue of whether it applies to non-federal jurisdictions such as Chicago.
