The 13-year-old brother retrieved a semi-automatic pistol and shot the girl.
Their parents were home at the time. Their father says he had no knowledge of any guns being in the house.
Police say the boy might have brought it home from another relative's house.
The girl was conscious Sunday night and was being interviewed by police.
