A divided appeals court has overturned the sentence for former Chicago Alderman Edward Vrdolyak.

The court ruled probation is too soft a punishment and ordered him resentenced on federal fraud charges involving a downtown real estate deal.

In his 16-page opinion, Judge Richard Posner calls the probation sentence a slap on the wrist. He adds, the penalty is so light, there is no assurance Vrdolyak wouldn't repeat the crime.

Judge David Hamilton Dissented, saying the judge who imposed the original sentence considered it thoughtfully.
