Thief uses skimmer to steal ATM info

February 12, 2010 Police say the devices can record debit card numbers and PINs. The thief then takes the information and creates fake card used to steal $500 from the victim's account.

Police are asking citizens to be vigilant about checking an ATM before using it. The victim never loses his or her debit card.

One skimming device has been linked to an ATM in Crystal Lake. Fraudulent transactions were also made at banks in Addison, Woodstock and Elk Grove Village. The culprit recently committed 17 fraudulent transactions within a 14-minute time span in Elk Grove Village.

The suspect is described as a black man, approximately 30-35 years old and always wearing a white hat with sunglasses.
