The accident happened at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say it appears the man was walking across the tracks to catch a train when he was struck.
Witnesses told police the gates were down and working when the accident happened.
Police have not released the victim's name but say he is from Maywood.
The train was stopped until about 4 p.m. The crash also delayed some Metra trains.
Downers Grove police say the unidentified victim crossed the tracks while the gates were down.
No one on board the train was hurt.
