February 15, 2010 --
A group of top Democrats in Illinois have sent a letter to House Speaker Michael Madigan saying they are concerned about his proposal which would eliminate the office of lieutenant governor. The Springfield Journal Democrat reports the letter tells Madigan the plan is premature and it would profoundly alter the state's electoral and succession process.
The group is calling on Madigan to work closely with the state Democratic Central Committee to develop a comprehensive process to find a candidate to replace Scott Lee Cohen on the Democratic ticket.
Cohen gave up the lieutenant governor nomination after allegations of domestic violence came to light.
