Sola's Chef Carol Wallack participating in South Beach Wine & Food Festival

February 22, 2010 Chef Carol Wallack is getting out of winter-weary Chicago and heading to sunny Florida this week. But it will be a working getaway; the chef and owner of Chicago's sola restaurant, is going to Miami participate in "The Best of The Best" event at the 2010 Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival. She will be competing, along with her Chef de Cuisine, Alex Shalev, against some of the country's best chefs on Friday, February 26.

The South Beach Wine & Food Festival sobefest.com/2010 is one of the nation's premiere culinary and wine events. Taking place February 25 through 28, the four-day destination event features the biggest stars in the culinary industry as well as the world's most renowned wine and spirits producers. This is Wallack's second consecutive year participating in the fest. In 2009 Wallack competed in Rachel Ray's Burger Bash and took home the prize for "Best Potatoes," for her parmesan truffle fries.

Chef Wallack will be serving Allen Brothers Wagyu New York Strip with Fingerling- Oxtail Hash with a Slow Cooked Quail Egg, Shallots, Swiss Chard and a five Spice Jus. Wallack will be one of 39 chefs from around the U.S. participating and just one of four from Chicago. Bill Kim of Urban Belly, Arun Sampanthavivat of Arun's Thai Restaurant, and Mindy Segal of Mindy's Hot Chocolate are the other local chefs competing to be named "Best of the Best."

Chef Wallack shares the recipe that you can make at home, based on her contest entry, as well as the recipe for the dish she'll be making in the competition. You can try them yourself, or let the chef cook for you at sola, 3868 N. Lincoln, Chicago. For reservations, call 773.327.3868 or visit sola's website at sola-restaurant.com
