Many smokers will tell you starting their habit wasn't the smartest move. And, now, new research is finding intelligence may actually play a part.

Research in the journal Addiction looked at more than 20,000 Israeli men in the military. Those who smoked ended up with significantly lower intelligence test scores than non- smokers. Researchers say this remained true even after they accounted for socioeconomic status.

The findings suggest that those with a lower IQ are more likely to choose to smoke rather than smoking makes people less intelligent.
