The Lee County, Florida, sheriff turned over custody of Jacob Nodarse to Illinois State Police Friday afternoon. It is expected Nodarse will fly back to Illinois Friday evening, where he will face questions about his possible involvement in the triple slaying.
Jeff Kramer, his wife, Lori, and their adult son, Michael, were shot to death in their Darien home early Tuesday morning.
Nodarse has been charged with obstruction of justice. A second man, identified as the ex-boyfriend of the Kramer's daughter, Angela, is being held by police. Neither has been charged with murder.
"We are going to try to move as swiftly as possible but there are procedures in place to safeguard the rights of anyone who is a suspect or is accused," said DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett.
DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett spent several hours this morning at the Darien Police Department. For three days now, detectives have been interrogating Angela's ex-boyfriend, with whom she has a 1-year-old child. The two have reportedly been quarreling over custody.
In most cases police would have had to charge or release a person by now.
"If you're making progress, if you can demonstrate to the courts that there's probably cause for continued detention then that is reasonable under the Fourth Amendment," said Birkett. "We are in the process of doing that."
Birkett scolded police and the media for leaking details of the investigation. He says a Sun-Times report claiming there was casino surveillance video of Nodarse meeting with Angela's ex-boyfriend an hour after the murder is untrue.
"If there was a meeting it was not captured on tape so please refrain from issuing details or information unless it's verified. Hopefully it's not coming from law enforcement," said Birkett.
On Friday, Michael Kramer's girlfriend, who survived the shooting by running to a neighbor's home, made an online tribute to the victims.
She wrote, "Lori & Jeff - you're the most understanding, respectful, hilarious, uplifting parents anyone in the world could ever ask for? I love you all so much? you always said I'll be a part of your family no matter what. I will always be a Kramer."
