Police involved in south suburban shootout

March 10, 2010 (RIVERDALE, Ill.)

Police say Riverdale Police were assisted by Cook County Sheriff's police. They were trying to arrest suspects in a drug investigation at a Citgo gas station when two suspects in a red van ignored an officer's warning to surrender.

The suspect took off eastbound on 138th Street -- with officers behind them who opened fire at the van. The van then stopped a couple of blocks down the road.

The two suspects were taken into custody. One sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Onlookers say they were stunned to witness the shootout.

"It was the first time I ever saw it right here. You hear about it all the time but to actually see it, it kind of shakes you," said Tyrone Hardin, witness.

Cook County Sheriff spokesperson Steve Patterson said no officers were shot, but some sustained minor injuries while the suspects were trying to make their getaway. They are expected to be ok.
