Weis: CPD committed to diversity

March 10, 2010 (CHICAGO)

Last week, four Hispanic officers were promoted to command positions. Superintendant Jody Weis says he will also expand representation of African-Americans, Asians and other minority groups. But Weis says a shortage of minorities in the lower ranks is restricting minority promotions.

"We have a very small number of lieutenants, both on the African-American side of the house and on the Latino side, it's ridiculously small. We don't have a high representation in the captain's ranks, so what we have to do is start building from our base," said Weis.

Weis says he wants a department that more accurately reflects the city's population.
