Police issue warnings to motorists

March 15, 2010 (EVANSTON, Ill.)

Police in the northern suburb will issue verbal warnings to motorists this week that the new ordinance is in effect. Those involved in reckless or negligent driving, or those involved in traffic accidents while on hand-held cell phones, will receive more than a warning.

The law allows the use hands-free devices.

Starting next Monday --violations will cost drivers a $50 dollar fine. If someone is involved in an accident, the fine shoots up to a maximum of $200.

The ordinance also prohibits texting, web browsing, reading and sending electronic messages, and listening to voicemail while driving.
