Park Ridge fifth grader called a 'hero'

March 16, 2010 (PARK RIDGE, Ill.) During a city council meeting Monday night, the mayor of Park Ridge and police chief presented Jacob Vowell with a life-saving medal and a certificate of appreciation.

Vowell is a patrol boy.

On February 2, a kindergarten student was in the crosswalk when a car ran a stop sign. Jacob pulled the girl out of harm's way.

"I was just doing my job, and any other fifth grader could have done it. I just happened to be there at the time, and they gave me this. Thank you for awarding me," the fifth grader said.

Police say if Jacob had not done what he did, the kindergarten student could have been seriously hurt.
