Betty Burden was arrested last week after dropping off a bus full of children.
On Monday night, parents in Mount Prospect said they were angry that her boss, Vincente Ramirez, allowed her to get behind the wheel even after someone allegedly told him she smelled of alcohol.
Investigators say he was trying to determine whether burden was drunk by following her before he called police.
ABC7 news partner the Daily Herald reports Ramirez has been suspended while the investigation proceeds.
