Food prices up in first quarter

Wis. food prices rise 3 pct in first quarter of 2010
April 1, 2010 (MADISON, Wis.) The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation tracks the price of 20 food items. It says the average cost of those items was just under $53 in the first quarter of this year.

That compares to about $51.50 for those same items in the fourth quarter of last year.

The biggest difference was sugar. The average retail price for a 4-pound bag rose 19 percent to $2.63. Prices also went up for milk, eggs, flour and beef.

Items whose prices have fallen include chicken, cheddar cheese, potatoes and corn oil.

Federation spokesman Paul Ketring says the biggest factor in retail prices will be energy. He says if fuel prices go up, the impact on food prices will be immediate.
