Study says daycares should not send home mildly ill children

April 19, 2010

A study of about 10 child care centers in Wisconsin found almost 6 out of 10 send home children who have minor illnesses, even though professional guidelines suggest otherwise.

Current guidelines recommend that children with mild illnesses, even in some cases, certain infectious illnesses such as pink eye can safely stay at their child care center.

That's because by the time symptoms start showing the child has likely been contagious for at least several days.

Authors of the study say sending children home places a burden on parents who have to miss work.
