Vatican funds adult stem cells

April 23, 2010

The Catholic Church is funding the $3 million project which will involve the use of adult stem cells.

They are much less controversial than embryonic stem cells that involve embryos.

Scientists from Italy and the University of Maryland School of Medicine will be doing the study together on intestinal stem cells.

They are considered to be very active and can be programmed to generate various kinds of cells.

The can also be easily harvested from a living donor during a biopsy. That means patients would be able to use their own stem cells.
