Attorney charged with bouncing $50K in checks

April 28, 2010 The Cook County Sheriff's Department said Michael Skoubis, 48, has been practicing law for almost 25 years.

The sheriff's department was responding to complaints that Skoubis wrote three checks to a business associate -- one for $30,000 and two for $10,000 -- all of which bounced in early 2009.

A Cook County investigation revealed the state agency overseeing attorney conduct allegedly has 10 pending complaints filed against Skoubis relating to fees being paid by clients without legal work being done on their behalf.

Investigators say Skoubis, whose office is near Madison and LaSalle St. in Chicago's Loop, primarily handles divorce cases.

Skoubis turned himself in to investigators on Saturday. He remains free on $60,000 bond. His next court date is set for May 13 in Skokie.
