Mother killed in South Side shooting

May 1, 2010 (CHICAGO) Carmenda Woodard, 29, was heading eastbound on 62nd Street near Champlain with three other people early Saturday morning when someone drove up along side them and opened fire.

Woodard was hit in the back and died. The father of her children says one of the other people in the car may have been the intended target.

"I believe someone might have been aiming at them, and just, she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and this is a very unfortunate loss. I've lost a very, very, very close loved one," said the children's father Eddie Blue.

Police remained on the scene for hours after the shooting and were taking witness statements and trying to reconstruct exactly what the circumstances were surrounding the shooting.

Woodard's children range in age from two weeks old to 14 years old.

No one suspects were in custody Saturday evening. Woodard's family members are urging anyone with information in the case to contact police.
