The dog, called Eisenhower by those who have been caring for him, could go home with a foster family as early as Thursday.
The 4-year-old pit bull interrupted traffic on the busy highway during the early morning commute last Wednesday and then again on Thursday. He finally gave in to officials after the second chase and was taken to an animal hospital in Hillside.
Eisenhower was not seriously injured in the expressway incident, but was treated for dehydration. Workers at the animal hospital said the dog has rested up, eaten well and is now playful. All he needs before he heads to a foster family is the final OK from the vet. No valid owner has come forward.
The foster family, which is part of the Precious Pets Almost Home group in Lemont, will try to adopt Eisenhower out from there.
