Victim of Winnetka hit-and-run in critical condition

Charges have been filed in a hit-and-run accident that left a 16-year-old girl critically injured in north suburban Winnetka. The suspect is due in court Monday.The victim, Sarah Goone, was struck at approximately 4 p.m. Friday afternoon at the intersection of Greenbay Road and Winnetka Avenue.

Police say the girl was crossing the street when she was hit by a car that then fled the scene.

The 18-year-old driver, Erin Hughes, was caught a short time later and has been charged with failure to report an accident, failure to give information or render aid, and failure to exercise due care.

The victim reportedly had to have brain surgery following the crash. She remained in critical condition Sunday night.

Sarah Goone's parents say they have stayed by their daughter's hospital bedside since the accident. They also say the next couple of days will be tough as she recovers from brain surgery.

Both the victim and the suspect are students at New Trier high school.
