Semi flips on Ike, spills pool-cleaning pellets

May 18, 2010 (ADDISON, Ill.) The truck swerved off the expressway near Route 83 and overturned about 5:35 a.m.. The containers were filled with calcium hypo-chlorite, a chemical used in water purification. However, the boxes filled with pellets did not appear to be damaged.

Illinois State Police say there is no danger from the spilled chemicals. Traffic was moving through the area as usual by 10 a.m.

Fire and rescue crews were also on the scene with the hazmat-trained officer, which Illinois State Police Elgin District Trooper Darren Love said is standard for accidents involving commercial vehicles.

While technically a hazardous material, the pellets are not considered dangerous in their solid firm, the trooper said.

The unidentified company whose truck was hauling the load has hired a private firm to remove the spilled load, according to Love.
