Alderwoman calls for cameras at beaches

May 27, 2010 (CHICAGO)

Police arrested 22 people Monday and Tuesday at the beach for a variety of crimes, including the assault of a jogger and a gang-related shooting.

Superintendent Jody Weis said today 14 of the suspects were from the suburbs.

The mayor blamed part of the trouble on young people who text each other about where they're going to congregate.

"We know there's texting going on. There's something going on in the suburban area with a lot of young adults. We know that," said Mayor Daley.

Alderman Vi Daley is calling for police surveillance cameras along the lakefront from Oak Street to North Avenue. Superintendent Weis said the department is looking at where cameras would be of the greatest use.
