Heightened security at Chicago's beaches was in effect Friday and quite apparent. An ABC7 Chicago camera crew captured numerous police patrols at North Avenue beach.

Chicago police say it is normal, but they've also started another patrol initiative, follows a rash of violence early last week. In all, 22 people were arrested.

Chicago police have installed security cameras and started random checks of bags and coolers looking for alcohol.

Drinking is illegal on the beach and proved to be the cause of several of the recent incidents.
