Burning boat survivor couldn't swim

June 25, 2010 (CHICAGO)

David Evans and his two passengers were forced to jump into the water near 79th Street Thursday. Evans and his friend were clinging to the swim platform as flames shot over their heads, inhaling the thick smoke. Eventually his friend told him they had to abandon the boat.

"He's like come on, and I was like, 'We got a problem, Bosco.' He was like, 'What's that?' I was like, 'I can't swim'," said Evans.

"I just knew the main thing was not to panic about stuff. So I made sure that the people were ok, and then the one's that was a little reluctant to go into the water, just made sure they were ok," said Kerensky Rhoden, passenger.

They spent about 10 minutes in the water before another boater picked them up.

A police boat towed the burned out boat from the lake.
