Mental health care advocates protest budget cuts

July 2, 2010 (CHICAGO)

The Illinois Department of Human Services faces the biggest cuts of any state agency. Much of it will come through the reduction or elimination of mental health and developmental disability programs not tied to Medicaid.

"We need the services. It's imperative that mental health services remain in that so that people's lives are saved," said Gloria Centeno, clinic volunteer.

Activists say as many as 60,000 people will lose mental health treatment because of the cuts.
