Woman arrested at jail for threats on kids

July 6, 2010 (CHICAGO) Police say Stephanie Porter, 44, was charged with disorderly conduct and breach of peace. Sheriff's police say Porter, accompanied by her jailed son's girlfriend, remarked while visiting the maximum security wing that her other children had made her late for the visit and she wanted to kill them.

The comments were overheard by other visitors who were concerned enough to alert jail staff, a release from the Cook County Sheriff's Department said.

Upon investigating, police say they learned Porter allegedly disciplined her 14- and 5-year-old children with physical violence, including knives. Authorities report neither child was enrolled in school.

Porter appeared in bond court Sunday, where she posted 10 percent of her $1,000 bond. Her next court date is set for July 19 in Maywood. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has taken custody of the two children.
