Rare butterflies released in Markham

July 12, 2010 (MARKHAM, Ill.)

The regal fritillary is threatened in Illinois because of habitat destruction east of the Mississippi River.

Scientists at the nature museum have been working on helping the butterfly's tiny larvae survive the Illinois winter. They had a breakthrough this year after putting larvae in covered cages on the museum roof to expose them to the cold in a habitat-like setting.

The butterflies were released into the wild in Markham.
