Passport price hike takes effect

The first-time purchase of a passport now costs $135 for those 16 years old and up, a price increase of $35.

The cost is now $105, up from $85, for minors under 16 years old.

The cost of a renewal is also higher.

The new fees for passports help cover the actual cost of making the blue books and cards, according to the state department. The $25 execution fee charged at facilities accepting passport applications is included in the prices.

The fees are also intended to help defray the costs of emergency services provided to Americans traveling aboard.
