7 deaths lead to calls for crossing change

August 2, 2010 (GARY, Ind.) The latest accident happened last month when two women were killed at the crossing at the Lake/Porter County Line Road. Witnesses say the driver went around the lowered crossing arms.

Railroad engineers believe adding a median or barrier at the railroad crossing would prevent motorists from driving around down gates.

The addition of barriers or a median at the crossing requires approval from the city of Gary.
