White House pushes to make college more affordable

August 9, 2010 Duncan said having the Department of Education make student loans instead of banks, meaning an additional $60 billion will go to Pell grants over the next decade.

The president also plans to increase the education tax credit for middle class families.

"What we can do is look every child in the eye now across the country, and say no matter how tough things might be at home or in your community, if you work hard, that opportunity to go to college is going to be there," Duncan said.

The administration also wants the U.S. to have the highest proportion of college graduates of any country in the world by the year 2020.
