Hopefuls push to combine treasurer, comptroller jobs

August 22, 2010 (CHICAGO) Judy Baar Topinka is running for comptroller and Dan Rutherford is in the race for treasurer. The comptroller gives out state funds and the treasurer invests them.

The candidates say their plan would save money.

"The key is the fact that we will save approximately $12 million of taxpayer money annually from two areas-- consolidation of staff and management of cash," said Dan Rutherford.

Consolidation of the offices would require a constitutional amendment. The candidates hope to have one on the ballot in 2012. If it succeeds, one of their jobs would be eliminated in 2014.
