Maggie Daley surgeon dies at 51

August 24, 2010 (CHICAGO)

Dr. Alan Yasko was an internationally known bone cancer surgeon and chief of musculoskeletal oncology at Northwestern University's Lurie Cancer Center.

Yasko's expertise made headlines in March when he performed a nearly two-hour surgery on first lady Maggie Daley to strengthen a right leg damaged by a malignant bone tumor.

Mayor Daley talked about the doctor at a park dedication Tuesday morning, calling Yasko a good friend.

Yasko was just 51 years old when he died of a pulmonary embolism last Thursday while attending a medical conference in Cancun, Mexico.
