Possible link between antihistamines, extra pounds

August 25, 2010

A new study finds people who use prescription antihistamines to relieve allergy symptoms may be more likely than non-users to carry excess pounds.

The reason is still not clear.

In this study in the journal Obesity, antihistamine use was associated with a 55 percent increase in the odds of being overweight versus non-use.

But scientists say this study does not prove cause and effect. It's possible there are some other factors explaining the link.

Past studies have shown allergies and asthma themselves are associated with obesity.
