NewsViews: U.S. Senate nominee LeAlan Jones

August 29, 2010 (CHICAGO)

He's a football coach at Simeon High School. And he won the prestigious Peabody Award and the Robert F. Kennedy Grand Prize for two documentaries on life and death on Chicago's South Side.

Jones also has some unique stands on issues. He would decriminalize marijuana and tax it to provide a new source of revenue for government. He says political campaigns should be publicly financed, with free TV and radio ad time for candidates.

On education, Jones wants pre-school to be free and universal. He would put new emphasis on vocational training, green issues, and technology. And he wants a bill of rights for freelance and part-time workers, so they get vacations, health care and parental leave.
