Joliet landfill owner charged by feds

August 30, 2010 (CHICAGO)

The U.S. attorney's office claims that Frank Schmidt failed to pay more than $2 million in taxes over the last five years.

Schmidt used to own a landfill in Joliet. In 2005, the former governor ordered it shut down for environmental violations.

Schmidt is a relative of Blagojevich's father in law, Chicago Alderman Dick Mell. He claimed the closure was meant to punish him for criticizing Blagojevich.

ABC7 went to Schmidt's home today in suburban Itasca for comment, but were told he was not there.
