Consumer Reports to rate surgical groups

Consumer Reports rates everything from cars to refrigerators. Now the magazine is rating medical groups that perform heart bypass surgery.

Ratings of 221 surgical groups are now online and will be printed in the magazine. The groups are rated as below average, average or above average.

Right now the info is only available to subscribers, but in several months, the public can see it at the website of the Society for Thoracic Surgeons.

The society, which has been tracking surgeons' performance for years, gave the information to Consumer Reports.

An article in the New England Journal of Medicine says this effort is a watershed event in healthcare accountability.
