Traffic ticket costs skyrocket Wednesday

Drivers beware: It's now going to cost a whole lot more if you're caught breaking the rules of the road. Beginning Wednesday, the average fine for minor offenses jumps to $120. That includes speeding up to 20 miles over the speed limit, running a stop sign or making an illegal turn.

The previous fine had been $75.

Going 21 to 30 miles over the speed limit will now cost you $140, up from $95.

Many of the fines have not changed since 1992.

The additional revenue will go to the Illinois State Police and local governments.
