Palmer House celebrates 140th birthday

September 15, 2010 (CHICAGO)

The hotel is now an official landmark.

The plaque designating the palmer house as a historic property was unveiled today during a ceremony right outside the Loop hotel.

"Since 1871, the Palmer House has been the site of political activity," said Palmer House General Manager Dean Lane. "Presidents James Garfield, Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama all campaigned in the hotel ballrooms."

There may have been some campaigning today as well.

In addition to Mayor Richard Daley taking part in the ceremony, Alderman Brendan Reilly and other politicians were there.

On the other hand, they all may have just wanted to taste the giant cake decorated to look like the hotel.
