Giannoulias: TV ads a 'smear campaign'

U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias is criticizing plans by a group with ties to former Bush advisor Karl Rove to begin airing television ads in Illinois. Giannoulias claims the ads contain false information and support his opponent Congressman Mark Kirk. He says he's basing his comments on what the organization American Crossroads has done in other states.

Giannoulias says Kirk helped Rove wreck the economy. Now, he says, Rove is repaying the favor.

"Today I call on Karl Rove to explain who's funding these negative ads, and I call on Congressman Kirk to denounce this corporate-funded smear campaign," said Giannoulias.

"During this campaign, there will be a number of outside groups trying to buy television time. Giannoulias is heavily backed by outside big unions and trial lawyers," Kirk said.

Kirk said he didn't know about the ads until the Giannoulias press conference Sunday. He made his comments at a parade in suburban Romeoville.
