Three local soldiers killed in helicopter crash

Three of the American soldiers killed this week when a Blackhawk helicopter crashed in Afghanistan were from Illinois and Indiana.

They were among nine members of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade who died in the incident.

Major Robert Francis Baldwin, 37, was from New Boston, Illinois, which is south of the Quad Cities. He entered the army in 1994.

Staff Sergeant Joshua David Powell, 25, of New Berlin, near Springfield, was also killed. Powell entered the army in November 2004.

Sergeant Marvin Ray Calhoun, Jr., 23, also died. He was from Osceola, Indiana, which is near Elkhart.

Calhoun joined the Army in 2006.

Memorial services for the soldiers will be held in Afghanistan and at Fort Campbell.
