As part of Hispanic heritage month, Illinois honors a Marine Corps veteran who served in both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

"We thank Rodrigo Garcia for his continued dedication and commitment to the state, its veterans, and the entire community of Cook County. Thanks, Rodrigo," said Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs Director Dan Grant.

Grant gave Rodrigo Garcia a plaque of appreciation.

Garcia grew up in Little Village, and he won many honors during five years in the Marines.

As board chairman of the Student Veterans of America, he crusades for veterans' rights and promotes the cause of education for those who served their country.
