Gutierrez to delay decision in possible mayor run

September 25, 2010 (CHICAGO) At an event Saturday in Pilsen, he said he is taking steps to be in a position to run for mayor, if he decides to do so. Gutierrez said volunteers were out Saturday collecting the required signatures, but for now, the congressman said his priority is ensuring that Democrats hold on to their majority in the House of Representatives.

As for his future, Gutierrez said he would have to determine where he would be most useful. but it appeared immigration reform is his top goal.

"You cannot give up what your core values are in order to promote your own personal agenda or career. You know what I've believed in for the last 18 years, I'm not going to turn my back on that," he said.

Saturday's event was organized by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee rights. Speakers called on Congress to pass immigration reform.
